I guess I was sleeping on the Seer job; I missed the Ides of March by one day (today). When I finally awoke, I realized I will have to wait until May 15th to celebrate the Ides again (well, perhaps there will be some military parade by then)….If only Caesar had listened to the Seer in 44 BC, history (and Shakespeare) would have been rewritten. Does that sound familiar, or what? Many a self-proclaimed, or publicly acknowledged clairvoyant, like the late Jean Dixon have predicted danger surrounding famous people. Dixon predicted the assassination of a Democrat President while in office. Her prediction is so controversial, skeptics still point out she didn’t name John F. Kennedy. They argue her prophecy was so vague, it doesn’t count as a psychic “hit.”
Let me refute the refuters on that note, particularly. The skeptics finger-point the media, declaring the press tends to over-report (hype) psychic predictions that appear to be correct (hence, the so-called Jean Dixon Effect) and overlook the many forecasts that are incorrect. Well, let me set this crooked record a little straighter, by posing this question: what do Jean Dixon and Babe Ruth have in common? The correct answer: they both struck out many more times than they hit home runs (in Babe Ruth’s case, 1330 strike-outs compared to 714 HRs.). While Babe Ruth is still regarded as a baseball phenom, Jean Dixon is derided as a bogus seer. Her gift of prophecy was a great burden to her, even before her death in the late 1990s.
So there, skeptics, who do not believe in any form of clairvoyance (even dating as far back as 44 B.C.)! How can you praise the Babe’s Home Runs, despite his many whiffs, and debunk Jean Dixon her psychic accuracies, pointing out only her misreads?
I’ve read enough history about the predictions of famous (and not-so-famous) clairvoyants to know how easy it is for a psychic to misread or mis-state extra sensory perceptions. Jean Dixon, although famed enough to have her very own Effect, was no different from most psychics – missing many times, but “hitting” some times dramatically (can we call those Home Runs?).
Since we are not out of the economic briar path quite yet, and since there seem to be many terrorists trying to upend us, once again, one would not have to be a Jean Dixon to predict there are still some Ides (very worrisome days in the months ahead). There are scientists, around the globe, watching Random Number Generators to see if an alarming event is foreshadowed by any signs of public pre-cognition. If they find some statistical jump, the skeptics might have to shut up. Although there might not be a significant event on the 15th day of any upcoming month, the danger is still hanging around us. Only if we are perceptive enough (buying the right intelligence agents) can we avoid the next “clear and present” dangers, as we seem to have done, most recently, at Christmas.
Most people who have ESP are reluctant to post their predictions for fear of ridicule, but I think they (including me) should be more courageous, continuing to step up to the plate, just like Babe Ruth, who didn’t let numerous strike outs deter him.
